Laurențiu Mălăescu is a farmer from Gorj who began growing an Italian variety of giant tomatoes. A single tomato can weigh over 1 kg.
A kilogram of tomato is no utopia. The man who delivers tomatoes to the market in Târgu Jiu also runs several solariums in the village of Băleşti in Gorj County. Laurenţiu assures us that the tomatoes are 100% organic. He sells them for 8 lei per kilogram because production is significantly lower than that of Romanian tomatoes
” They grow big, but there are fewer of them. They don’t grow as abundantly as round tomatoes. They have to be thinned out to get that big. We put four or five garbage trucks there every year. I don’t use stimulants, fertilizers, or anything else. I don’t force them to grow. I only use natural fertilizers, ” the grower said in an interview with avedur.ro.
Laurentiu posted photos of tomatoes weighing over a kilogram on his Facebook profile. He claims that demand for the vegetables he grows is very high.
Customers are very surprised, they come, look at them and say that they have never seen such large tomatoes, that they are just like in the old days, large, popular tomatoes, ” says a man from Gorje.
