Colon cancer: a growing threat to young people

What is colon cancer?

Colon, or colorectal, cancer develops in the large intestine or rectum. It usually begins as polyps (small growths in the lining of the colon) that can become cancerous over time.

Why is it increasing in young people?

There are several theories and factors that could explain this increase:

  1. Unhealthy diet

High consumption of ultra-processed foods, red meat, sausages, and low fiber can alter the gut microbiota and increase the risk of cancer.

  1. Sedentary lifestyle

Lack of regular physical activity is associated with an increased risk of digestive diseases and colorectal cancer.
